One of the most used apps nowadays is Instagram. Who doesn’t know this photo app? People love to take pictures, edit them, and share them with the world. They also love to create stories with music, gifs, text, special effects, and whatnot. You can have a lot of fun with it, but did you know that you can also use it to learn a new language? Yes, that’s possible. That’s why today I’ll share with you the best Instagram accounts for learning French.
There are so many to choose from, so I tried to narrow down the list as much as possible. I have followed all of these accounts for some time and highly recommend them for anyone interested in the French language. Are you ready? C’est parti!
French with Handsome
View this post on Instagram
The creator of French with Handsome is Joël, a young French teacher living in Portugal. As indicated in his bio, this account provides us with French vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. I’d like to emphasize this last part. This account is full of short videos with phrases where the teacher concentrates on pronunciation. He first pronounces everything slowly, and then at the speed a native speaker uses. Every video comes with the French text and its English translation for your convenience. What I like particularly is that you can see the teacher’s mouth and note how a sound is made.
You can also find quizzes now and then so you can review what you learned in previous clips. On top of that, Joël offers a free ebook and a course with the basics of learning French. The course is found on Udemy, and at the time of writing this post, it costs $9.99.
Great for: beginners and those interested in practicing pronunciation.
Talk in French

Talk in French is similar to French with Handsome. The creator makes an emphasis on pronunciation. You get to learn vocabulary, phrases, and complete sentences. They all come with the French text and its English translation as well.
This account also has some free quizzes in its feed, but other than that, you have to buy their ebooks if you want to learn more. They have a section in their featured stories where they direct you to buy their products with expressions, vocabulary, slang, and useful phrases.
Great for: beginners and those interested in practicing pronunciation.
French Training

This is one of my favorite accounts. You will find a little bit of everything here: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, learning tips, quizzes, etc. The teacher is very active on social media and uploads a lot of stories. She makes stories of all kinds. In some, she analyzes the lyrics of a song or the subtitles of a movie, while in others she teaches vocabulary and phrases in practical situations like grocery shopping, eating out, or traveling.
You can also find several exercises to practice your French. In some, you have to write something, and she will correct your mistakes if any, or she may request you create a story about something in particular, and if you’re chosen, she will reshare it and correct any mistakes. She is very good at explaining grammar and tenses and correcting any mistakes she notices.
This is one of the most complete accounts for learning French in my opinion, and it’s all free! The only thing is, other than French, she only uses Portuguese since she’s half Brazilian. However, I don’t think that’s too much of a problem to understand what’s being taught.
Great for: those interested in learning French in a fun, practical way.
Frenchacking

Frenchacking is an interesting mix of vocabulary, phrases, and pronunciation clips. However, it takes a different approach by being more visual. You get to learn through images, including memes. In fact, there are tons of French memes to impress your friends. You learn and laugh a bit. Isn’t that great?
As a bonus, you can sign up for a 30-day challenge. You will receive a 5-minute read via email every day about different French things. It’s free!
Great for: visual learners and those looking for something simple.
A Cup of French

This account is full of interesting, colorful infographics, most of them with sound. You get to learn vocabulary, verb conjugations, grammar, and expressions. The creator also includes some crosswords to add a little fun to the mix.
You can also find interesting recommendations of movies, music, travel destinations, and learning resources. Or how about joining a challenge where you have to introduce yourself and have the teacher correct your mistakes? All her followers will see you, and you will get to practice your French. Overcoming that fear is important.
Great for: visual learners and learning vocabulary.
Your Online French Teacher

If you’re not a beginner, you should give this one a shot. This account has tons of dialogues and historical/interesting facts that come with sound for your convenience. You can read and listen to the text as many times as you want. Why not read at the same time to practice your pronunciation?
The account also contains some posts with vocabulary, common expressions, and quizzes to test your knowledge.
Great for: intermediate learners.
Sound French

This account was created by Lucas, a French teacher from Paris. His posts are simple and focus on pronunciation. You will learn short phrases and sentences read by him.
This is one of the first French accounts I started following, and it helped me a lot to improve my listening skills.
Lucas is also a teacher on italki. In case you need a private teacher, I recommend you hire him.
Great for: learning vocabulary, improving your listening skills, and practicing your pronunciation.
My French Tips

This account is packed with bilingual stories (French/English), vocabulary, slang, expressions, tips, anecdotes, famous quotes, music recommendations, writing exercises, and even memes. In fact, the concept taught changes every day, adding variety to the mix.
The teacher also offers a Street French course on Udemy. At the time of writing this post, it costs $12.99.
Great for: learning a little bit of everything.
Street French
View this post on Instagram
This is one of the best Instagram accounts you can rely on to learn French. It was created by Charlie and Maïa, a young couple living in Paris. You can find lots of French resources to enhance your learning. What’s best, most of them are free!
Don’t get fooled by the name of the account. While you will learn a lot of street French or slang, it’s not limited to that. In addition to learning vocabulary, grammar, and expressions, you can also participate in exercises like dictations and translation challenges where you record yourself in a story and send it to them for any necessary corrections.
Charlie and Maïa are very active on Instagram and upload new content regularly. They frequently answer questions they receive in their stories about French grammar, expressions, French culture, life in Paris, etc. You can also find excellent recommendations on French movies, music, literature, and learning tips. On occasion, they do live sessions, so make sure you follow them to get notified about this.
On top of all that, they have a YouTube channel and give private French lessons. If you were to choose just one account, I’d recommend this one.
Great for: learners of all levels and those who prefer a more relaxed, informal atmosphere.
Conclusion
As you can see, there are lots of options to choose from. Most of the creators of the accounts mentioned above are professional teachers, but each one of them takes a different approach when teaching French. Some of them focus on pronunciation or vocabulary, while others offer more resources to their followers.
You can find many of these teachers on other online platforms like YouTube. If you want to step it up, you can buy their courses or take private lessons with them.
I recommend you try these accounts and select two or three to follow. Not only will you learn some valuable things, but you will also get the feel of what it’s like if you decided to buy their courses or take lessons with them.
I hope you found this useful. Do you follow any of those accounts? Which ones would you recommend? Let me know in the comments below. Au revoir, les amis!
Wow! I seriously had no idea that you could learn French on Instagram! I use Instagram and follow several accounts, but it had never occurred to me that it was used for courses as well. This makes me rethink the use of Instagram, perhaps I should get more active on it 🙂
There are several courses I like, for example, the one of French with Handsome, it looks like a fun and interactive course. Streetfrench also looks great. For me, I would pick youronlinefrenchteacher, since it is an advanced level, and I would like to practice and refresh my French. I have known it since I was 8, but I have gotten rusty, so I need to freshen it up.
I also like that some accounts focus on different learning abilities. Some people are auditive, others are visual, and therefore frenchacking is great for visual learners.
Hi, Christine,
Yes, we can also use Instagram to learn a language. It’s one of the apps I use the most, so it’s great to benefit from using it.
There is a little bit of everything for everyone. It’s just a matter of searching.
Thanks for commenting.
I would never have thought one can learn French (or any other language on Instagram! I still consider Instagram a platform for sharing pictures and stories but open my eyes in this sense. It’s great to see that there are so many French teachers there.
Out of the accounts you recommend, I like the Street French most. After all, learning the language people really speak is the best, much better than just learning with a textbook. Thank you for this overview!
Hi, Lenka,
I know, right? We can use Instagram to have fun and learn at the same time.
I agree with you. We have to learn the real French (or any other language) people speak on the street, not ignoring grammar rules, of course. We have to learn both.
Thanks for commenting. Glad you liked it.
