Practice is key. If we want to learn a language, we have to speak it as much as we can. Fortunately, there are many resources at our disposal. Some of them are even free.

My sister came to the United States with little English proficiency (as an exchange student) and she found herself forced to express herself in a language she could barely speak. 

The combination of school and constant communication with friends she made in USA, helped her abilities to learn the new language faster. I strongly agree that using a conversation exchange such Tandem is a great way to speed up your learning of a language.
